Grosvenor Casinos across London may close this weekend as workers have voted in favour of strike action.
The vote saw around 150 staff members, who are members of the Unite union, decide to take action across London venues to “win a fair wage” after a 91% majority rejected retention bonus payments of £600 and £800 from Grosvenor, which they described as “inadequate” amidst the cost of living crisis.
The staff members striking will include mostly dealers and croupiers, although some kitchen and waiting staff are reportedly striking too.
The strike will begin on Friday, September 9th, at 6 PM BST and will run through the weekend until Monday, September 12th, at 6 AM BST.
Venues said to be impacted include The Barracuda, The Victoria, The Gloucester, The Park Tower, The Golden Horseshoe, The St Giles, and The Rialto.
Sharon Graham, the General Secretary at Unite, said in a statement via Gambling Insider: “Here we go again: Grosvenor Casinos is another big money company that is raking it in but refusing to pay its workers a wage that they can live on.
“It’s just not acceptable and this huge vote for action underscores the sense of anger across this workforce. Our members at Grosvenor Casinos will have Unite’s full backing in this fight for a fair deal.”
Dave Turnball, Unite’s National Officer for the Hospitality Sector, commented: “Grosvenor Casinos need to understand that this workforce is united, and more workers are joining Unite every day.
“London is one of the most expensive cities on earth for workers to survive in, which is why the message from the members could not be clearer: only a substantial uplift in pay will do.”
He added: “Grosvenor Casino’s chronic recruitment and retention issues prove that the current pay rates are just not sustainable. Not improving pay is just not an option.”
